The Telephone and Business


Think back about how Alexander Graham Bell dreamt every night when he went to sleep while trying day after day to build a telephone.  What were is goals? What did he see phones doing for the public? What did Mr. Bell see the telephone doing in the future? Well, 100 years later, he would be absolutely shocked and maybe a bit sad at what has happened.

I first started in sales in 1995. When I needed to make phone calls, I had to pull over to a drive up phone booth.  Crazy as this may sound, it worked well.  I knew every drive up pay phone in every city in my territory.  Many times, I would find or would hold up competitor sales reps while on my pay phone.  I was not allowed to stay home and make calls. We had to make the calls to set appointments, confirm appointments and follow up with customers all by pay phones on the road.  

Fast forward 18 years later and what an incredible difference in what we have available today. The world now is communicating on cell phones, Skype, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, email and text messages.  Mr. Bell would be out of his mind in amazement.

I have been happily working my L’BRI business for over 15 years now and have seen the whirlwind of change in how we have to utilize all of the communication venues out there.

While training my Business Builders L’BRI Team (www.ginalbri.com), I am loving our Facebook Team Page where we recognize each other, give gratitude, guidance, ideas and support.  I also use Facebook to invite and communicate with my customer and potential customers. Twitter and LinkedIn have been my struggle, so I hired someone to help me there.

Emails are a constant for me every day, all day.Some people say only check it a few times a day.  I am the type who sits in front of my email and I usually get to them as they come in.  I get so many in a day that it works well for me to stay on top of them.  I find myself many times asking a team member to call me because their emails have too many questions.  The phone does serve its purpose for me the most.

For me, the phone is where I can inspire, guide and really hear what the person is saying. Texting is funny for me because I have to get my reading glasses on (like an old lady) and then search and peck my way through the message I am writing.

Why do I love the phone still?  I feel it’s my duty to CALL my customers to talk with them about their shows, their skin, and their ambitions when they are thinking about joining my team.  Nothing will ever take away from the phone in my business.

I pride myself on working with my team in a program that we call FOCUS CALLS. This is where we help the team member with her 5 streams of income (Shows, Sales, Bookings, Sponsoring and Customer Follow Up). We talk once a week after each of their shows to help strengthen each show they have done. The greatest piece of this program is we can swiftly support them in leadership as we guide them to promote. Then, the end result is that they learn how to do FOCUS CALLS with their team.  It’s on the job FREE management training!!

So, stick with the phone people for 90% of your communications.  If you are reading this, please remember to call people back, RSVP and have a sense of urgency as a respectful way to communicate!

The Fortune Is In...


The conference was spectacular!  It was a great time to meet new friends, visit with other consultants and to learn more ways to share our fabulous products. This conference was especially rewarding for me. I was honored to be one of those receiving the Top Seller Award. Top sales equals top service. Here is how to service our customers so that you will have a steady flow of sales.

  • Schedule time blocks to call your customers. Setting a schedule keeps you on track. Begin with a manageable block of time. Generally early evening is an opportunity to find most customers at home. 
  • Hire someone to help make calls. It is well worth a few dollars to hire someone if you don’t have the time or prefer delegating the calling. Imagine if you paid someone $10 an hour and they made 10 calls each resulting in a product sale or party! 
  • Know that customer calls are not bugging our customers; it's servicing them. Our customers get busy too and may have just forgotten to order. Perhaps they missed the sales flyer for their favorite product or had a question and were too embarrassed to ask. You are doing them a favor by calling and touching base. 
  • Be consistent with calling each week. Keep to your schedule. It will become easier and easier each time you call. By keeping to a weekly goal you can reach out to old clients, and offer a personal make over to someone new. 
  • Be sure to get a name, number and an appointed time to call when giving out samples. Especially important to connect within the first few days. Have they tried it yet? Do they have any questions? How do they like it?
  • Help your team know the value of customer care calls. A weekly individual call to team members can help them stay on track. It can also let you know how much you care about their success. But most importantly you are showing them that you walk your talk.
